As the second season is right around the corner, here’s a quick Worst Roommate Ever season 1 recap.
What is the plot of the Worst Roommate Ever documentary?
Worst Roommate Ever is based on actual events and tells four stories of housemates who have evil, even violent, intentions and transform their innocent victims’ lives into nightmares. The story follows Jed Creek, who had no idea that Alex Miller was a well-known serial squatter and that he would use his understanding of tenancy laws to gradually evict her from her own house when he allowed her to rent her room through Craigslist.
What Is the Story Behind Each Case in Worst Roommate Ever?
The show narrates the tales of people who moved in with strangers only to discover they were the worst roommates ever. The five-part documentary series covers four incidents, all of which occurred in North and South America.
1-Dorothea Puente
Worst Roommate Ever begins with the story of Dorothea Puente, also referred to as the “Death House Landlady,” who murdered at least nine people in the 1980s. Puente preyed on the elderly and mentally ill residents of a boarding home in Sacramento, California, cashing their social security benefits after they passed away.
Ruth Monroe, her first victim, passed away from a heroin overdose, which Puente insisted was a suicide. She returned to running her boarding house after spending three years in prison for drugging and robbing an elderly man. Seven remains were found buried on a tenant’s land in 1988 after she went missing. Puente, who insisted on her innocence, was accused of nine murders, found guilty of three, and passed away in prison in 2011.
2- KC Joy
The second story of Worst Roommate Ever also tells the story of Maribel Ramos, a 36-year-old college student and Iraq War veteran who vanished in Santa Ana, California, in May 2013. After her roommate, KC Joy referenced Ramos in the past tense on the internet, suspicions quickly fell on him after her family filed a missing person report.
Joy was caught on camera looking up police locations and body decomposition. Not long after, Ramos’s body was discovered in a canyon. Before she passed away, authorities disclosed that Joy and Ramos had a rent dispute; prosecutors conjectured that Joy was in love with her. Joy received a sentence of 15 years to life in jail after being proven guilty.
3- Youssef Khater
Youssef Khater, a con artist, assaulted Callie Quinn in 2011 in Santiago, Chile. He tried to bury Quinn alive after bringing her to an apartment, hitting her with a metal object, and obtaining money from other residents. Despite having severe injuries, she lived.
Khater went into hiding while making up the story that he had to return to Denmark after his mother passed away. Attorney Rocío Berríos revealed Khater’s frauds, encompassing his fake identity as a marathon runner. Quinn’s case attracted national notice, exposing Khater’s violent and dishonest past. Khater denied intending to kill Quinn when he was arrested in August. He was convicted of attempted murder and fraud and spent 602 days in prison, most of which was spent pending trial.
4-Jamison Bachman
The case of Jamison Bachman, covered in two episodes of Worst Roommate Ever, is quite disturbing. In 2017, “Jed Creek,” a New York lawyer in need of temporary housing, was able to borrow Alex Miller’s spare room in Philadelphia. But “Creek” was actually infamous serial squatter Jamison Bachman.
Bachman immediately became troublesome, stealing things, fighting over bills, and refusing to pay rent. When Miller found out who he was, he discovered that he had a violent past with his previous housemates and a habit of squatting. Bachman assaulted her the following day, choking and stabbing her, despite Miller’s best efforts to drive him off with a lavish party. Bachman got arrested and his brother had to bail him out. Bachman killed his brother by beating him after his sister-in-law stopped him from staying.
