“Zootopia 2” has stormed the global box office with a massive $556 million opening weekend, securing the fourth-largest worldwide debut in history. The animated sequel follows only “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” placing it among the most successful launch weekends ever recorded.
The film earned $400 million internationally and $156 million domestically, marking the largest global and international opening for an animated film to date and the strongest worldwide debut of any 2025 release.
The movie’s performance was especially extraordinary in China, where it generated $272 million since Wednesday, becoming the biggest non-local animated opening ever and the second-largest non-local debut behind “Avengers: Endgame.” After just five days, Zootopia 2 has already surpassed the full theatrical run of the original Zootopia in China, which totaled $236 million.
Following China, the strongest international markets were France ($14.6 million), Korea ($13.7 million), Mexico ($10.4 million), and Germany ($8.8 million).
IMAX also reported record-breaking results with its largest Thanksgiving weekend in history, generating $40.8 million in ticket sales. “Zootopia 2” contributed $32 million, becoming IMAX’s biggest animated opening, largest November debut, and strongest Thanksgiving release ever.
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond praised the industry momentum, stating: “’ Zootopia 2’ and ‘Wicked: For Good’ delivered a phenomenal one-two punch for the Thanksgiving holiday — hitting the sweet spot for family audiences and sending our global box office soaring well past expectations.” He added, “Disney and Universal are to be commended on an excellent weekend for moviegoing around the world — a great indicator that fans of all ages are seeking distinctive cinematic entertainment this holiday season.”
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the film reunites characters Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they take on a mysterious new reptilian figure played by Ke Huy Quan.
