Raegan Revord, known for playing Missy Cooper on Young Sheldon, finally got to break free from her character’s stagnant hairstyle after six seasons of playing the rebellious teen. Despite portraying a character known for her bold personality, Missy’s hair remained relatively unchanged save for a ponytail here and a blonde dye job in one episode. That is, until Season 6, Episode 18, when the actress was finally allowed a haircut.
Revord revealed to ET in 2023 how significant this moment was, especially after years of requesting a change.
They called me over, and they were like, ‘Hey, we have some news for you.’
And then my hair person walks in and I’m like,
‘No, no, no, no, no. This is not happening!’ You get to cut your hair.’ And now I have short hair and I’m so happy. I love it so much. I got Van Leeuwen [ice cream] and I got a haircut. What more can you ask for?

This seemingly minor change was anything but trivial. The show’s hesitation stemmed from executive producer Chuck Lorre’s strict policy on character appearances, established during The Big Bang Theory. Lorre believed changing a character’s iconic look could disrupt the audience’s attachment to the show.
The audience had become infatuated with the character… to disregard that audience attachment was a mistake.
Reflecting on Kaley Cuoco’s pixie cut in The Big Bang Theory Season 8, Lorre once told Jessica Radloff
While this approach ensured consistency, some argue it limited the opportunity for visual storytelling. Other shows, like Scrubs and Mad Men, embraced character growth by letting their hairstyles evolve alongside their arcs. Elliot Reid’s (Sarah Chalke) evolving hairstyles on Scrubs, for example, mirrored her personal journey from insecure intern to confident professional.
Missy Cooper, a rebellious teen, could have benefited from similar storytelling opportunities. Changing her hairstyle throughout Young Sheldon could have amplified her dynamic personality and underscored her journey.
Although Revord’s haircut in Season 6 didn’t drastically change Missy’s look, it marked a significant moment for the actress and the character. And while Young Sheldon largely adhered to its predecessor’s rules, this moment hinted at the possibility of breaking free from tradition, offering fans a glimpse of Missy’s potential evolution.
