Woody Harrelson has made it clear he won’t be returning to HBO’s True Detective. The 64-year-old actor, who earned both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for playing Det. Marty Hart in the show’s first season, dismissed any chance of revisiting the role during an interview on NBC’s 3rd Hour of Today.
“Matthew’s so funny, but in fairness, never,” Harrelson said when asked if he’d reprise his role alongside Matthew McConaughey, who played Det. Rust Cohle. “Not a chance.”
Harrelson explained his decision, noting, “Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out the way it did. If anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”
The acclaimed 2014 season earned five Emmy Awards and multiple nominations for both Harrelson and McConaughey, solidifying it as a landmark in TV crime drama.
While Harrelson has no plans to return to True Detective, he confirmed a new collaboration with McConaughey: “We are doing something together and this is a comedy, half-hour, and hopefully people dig it.”
The pair are set to star as themselves in Brother From Another Mother, a half-hour comedy for Apple TV that follows them attempting to live together on McConaughey’s Texas ranch. A release date has not yet been announced.
