Netflix is bringing the magic of Willy Wonka back to audiences with a brand-new reality competition series, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, marking 55 years since the release of the beloved Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The series is set to premiere on September 23 and promises a fresh adventure inspired by the iconic chocolate factory.
One of the biggest surprises is the return of Gene Wilder’s unforgettable Willy Wonka voice. Although the legendary actor passed away in 2016, his voice has been recreated using artificial intelligence with the approval of his estate.
His widow, Karen B. Wilder, shared her thoughts on the project, saying, “We are delighted that Wonka’s The Golden Ticket celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades.“
The upcoming competition will also feature Rusty Goffe, who portrayed one of the original Oompa-Loompas in the 1971 classic. The show will follow 12 Golden Ticket winners, each joined by a partner of their choice, as they face a variety of physical, mental, and ethical challenges for the chance to win a life-changing prize.
The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The story follows young Charlie Bucket, played by Peter Ostrum, who earns one of five coveted Golden Tickets and is invited to tour the mysterious chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka, portrayed by Gene Wilder.
Throughout the journey, Charlie and the other ticket holders encounter magical inventions, unforgettable characters, and valuable life lessons as each child faces the consequences of their own behavior. Although the film received a modest box office response upon its release and was famously criticized by Dahl, it has since become a timeless family favorite, thanks in large part to Wilder’s memorable performance.
The beloved story has returned to the screen several times over the years. Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s 2005 adaptation, while Timothée Chalamet portrayed a younger version of the chocolatier in the 2023 musical prequel Wonka.
The new series is part of Netflix’s expanding lineup of Roald Dahl adaptations following the company’s acquisition of the author’s intellectual property in 2021. Other recent projects include Matilda the Musical, The Twits, and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More directed by Wes Anderson.
Wonka’s The Golden Ticket premieres on Netflix on September 23, giving fans another chance to step inside the world’s most famous chocolate factory while introducing the magic of Willy Wonka to a new generation.
