Wicked has made an impressive comeback at the box office, reclaiming the top spot from Moana 2. After losing to the Disney sequel during its record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend, Wicked is now back on top. As of December 9, it has stayed ahead of Moana 2 for three days straight.
The latest numbers from Wednesday, December 11, show Wicked earning $3.3 million, while Moana 2 made $2.5 million.
This musical movie has been doing so well that it climbed into the list of the top 25 highest-grossing PG films ever. To reach this milestone, Wicked had to surpass Shrek the Third—another film with a green main character!
Wicked has earned an impressive $333 million at the U.S. box office and $135 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $468 million. This puts the movie just $1 million away from breaking into the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year globally. It’s close to passing Successor, a Chinese film that made $469 million without releasing in the U.S.
Wicked has also made history as the highest-grossing movie ever based on a Broadway musical or opera. It recently surpassed The Little Mermaid to become one of the top four highest-grossing musicals of all time.
