Wicked has become one of the 50 biggest movies ever at the domestic box office. Since its release on November 22, the long-awaited movie version of the Broadway musical has been a huge hit. It’s now the highest-earning Broadway musical adaptation in movie history and ranks as the third biggest movie of the year in 2024. Only Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine have made more money at the domestic box office.
According to Deadline, Wicked has made $392.4 million at the domestic box office, putting it in 49th place among the highest-grossing movies ever in the U.S. It just passed Marvel’s 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home, starring Tom Holland, which earned $391.4 million. Wicked is now close to taking the 48th spot from Disney’s 2013 musical Frozen, which made $401 million domestically.

Wicked is now in its fifth week in theaters, but it’s still doing great at the box office. It’s expected to keep moving up the list of top-grossing movies in the U.S. and will soon pass Frozen and other films that made just over $400 million. While Wicked will climb higher on the top 50 list, it probably won’t catch up to the two biggest movies of 2024.
Rank | Movie | 2024 Domestic Box Office Total |
---|---|---|
1 | Inside Out 2 | $653 million |
2 | Deadpool & Wolverine | $636.8 million |
3 | Wicked | $392.4 million |

Inside Out 2 made $653 million, and Deadpool & Wolverine earned $636.8 million in the U.S., numbers that Wicked is unlikely to reach before its run ends in early 2025. However, it’s still unclear how close Wicked can get. Either way, Wicked has been a huge box office success and is the highest-earning movie of 2024 in the U.S. that isn’t a sequel. This success sets a strong foundation for Wicked: For Good, the second part, which is expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2025.
Wicked’s success shows that a great movie musical can do really well at the box office. In recent years, studios have been hesitant to promote movies as musicals, like with Wonka and Mean Girls, and even avoided it at first with Wicked. But with some of the best earnings for a musical movie ever, Wicked has proved that musicals can be even bigger hits than many non-musical films. Hopefully, this will encourage studios to promote musicals more confidently in the future.
