David F. Sandberg is returning to horror with a new scary movie from Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.
Maia Mitchell, Belmont Cameli, and Peter Stormare have joined the “Until Dawn” cast, a movie adaptation of the popular horror video game by Sony’s Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.
They will join Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion. Filming starts in mid-August.
David F. Sandberg, who directed “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” is returning to horror with a new project. He’s teaming up again with Gary Dauberman, the writer-producer from “Annabelle: Creation.”
Gary Dauberman, who has a special deal with the studio, wrote the latest script and produced the movie with Mia Maniscalco, David F. Sandberg, and Lotta Losten. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions are also helping to produce the film.
“Until Dawn,” first released in 2015, is a horror video game where eight friends gather at a remote mountain retreat. They face life-or-death situations, including a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and an old mining cave-in. The group must overcome their fears to survive the night.
No one knows how the movie will handle the many choices and paths from the game, but it’s described as a scary, R-rated tribute to horror movies with a big cast. Blair Butler wrote the first script.
It’s also not clear who Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli will play. However, insiders say Peter Stormare will return as Dr. Hill, the therapist, just like in the game.
“I’ve wanted to make another horror movie since Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation,” said Sandberg. “This film explores different horror styles to create the scariest experience possible. It captures the game’s spirit with new characters, making it a great introduction for newcomers and offering something fresh for game fans.”
Michael Bitar is in charge of the project for Screen Gems, with Charles Miller as the executive producer.
Maia Mitchell is best known for her long-running role on Freeform’s drama series “The Fosters” and its spinoff “Good Trouble,” which she also produced. She became famous with Disney Channel’s “Teen Beach” movies and recently finished working on the thriller “Family Secrets” with Eric Dane and Tyriq Withers.
Belmont Cameli starred in Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reboot and Netflix’s YA drama “Along for the Ride,” written by Sofia Alvarez from “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” He will soon appear in Barry Levinson’s mob film “Alto Knights” with Robert De Niro, set to be released by Warner Bros. later this year.
Peter Stormare is a seasoned actor with many roles, but he’s best known for his cheerful character in the Coen brothers’ movie “Fargo.” He has also appeared in “Armageddon,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Constantine,” and “Prison Break.”
Maia Mitchell is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, and Myman Greenspan. Belmont Cameli is represented by Stewart Talent, Industry Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson.
