Tom Cruise’s action-packed sci-fi film Oblivion is now available on Netflix. This post-apocalyptic adventure joins other Cruise hits like Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher, which saw renewed popularity on the platform last summer. Released on November 1, Oblivion gives fans another chance to experience Cruise’s thrilling performance in a unique, dystopian world.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who later worked with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick, Oblivion stars Tom Cruise alongside Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, and Andrea Riseborough. The story follows Jack Harper, played by Cruise, a repair technician on a damaged Earth left uninhabitable after aliens destroyed the moon.
As he nears the end of his mission, Jack discovers a woman who survived a spaceship crash, leading him to question his purpose and uncover hidden truths about the war. Freeman plays Malcolm Beech, a veteran soldier and leader of a scavenger community, while Kurylenko portrays Jack’s wife, Julia.
Oblivion earned praise for its bold visuals, but many critics found the plot confusing and lacking depth, resulting in mixed reviews. It holds a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but still performed well at the box office, making $288 million globally on a $120 million budget.
While Tom Cruise has had major hits with Paramount and Warner Bros., his projects with Universal, like The Mummy (a critical flop) and American Made (a quieter success), have been more mixed.
Tom Cruise recently signed a new deal with Warner Bros. to develop both original and franchise films. His first project under this partnership is an untitled movie directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñàrritu.
Tom Cruise is also teaming up with Universal and director Doug Liman for an ambitious space film, a project they first announced in 2020 with a reported $200 million budget. Cruise will play a struggling character who becomes Earth’s last hope.
Although most of the story takes place on Earth, he’ll film some key scenes in outer space, with NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX helping to make it happen. Liman recently shared a positive update, keeping fans excited for this unique adventure.
