The King of the Monsters is facing his most shocking fate yet. IDW Publishing has officially announced plans to kill Godzilla, marking a historic turning point for the legendary kaiju and the beginning of what Toho International calls an “insane” new era of storytelling.
According to a new press release from IDW Publishing, 2026 will usher in a major transformation for the Godzilla universe, beginning in January with the creature’s dramatic death. The milestone event will unfold in Godzilla #6, written by Tim Seeley and illustrated by Nikola Čižmešija, slated to hit comic shelves on January 7, 2026.
The issue will include several variant covers, among them a striking homage to The Death of Superman (Superman #75) the classic 1992 issue by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding recreated by Jurgens, Breeding, and Gregg Whitmore.

When asked about revisiting one of comics’ most iconic death covers, Dan Jurgens shared his excitement:
When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special Death of Godzilla cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it. I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!
Aaron John Gregory, Godzilla Product Development Manager, emphasized the magnitude of the event and Toho’s confidence in the creative team:
Allowing IDW to ‘kill’ Godzilla only six issues in to the new Kai-sei Era series just goes to show how much trust TOHO International has in both rock-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning Godzilla editor Jake Williams. These types of comic events cannot be handled lightly. In ’92, as a young teenager I waited in a long line to buy a copy of Superman #75, The Death of Superman, and was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages. I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-Sei era of Godzilla have delivered on that level; with all the electrifying excitement and pummeling panache you’ve come to expect in this series. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.
The ongoing Godzilla comic is part of IDW’s ambitious Kai-Sei Era, a new publishing phase redefining the kaiju’s mythology. Other current titles include Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone by Ethan S. Parker and Griffic Sheridan with art by Pablo Tunica, and Starship Godzilla by Chris Gooch and Oliver Ono.
Each of these series has contributed to a resurgence of fan interest in the franchise, expanding the lore and introducing new forms of Godzilla across multiple storylines. In a May interview with CBR, Jake Williams, IDW’s Eisner-winning Godzilla editor, reassured fans that despite the bold direction, the character remains true to his roots:
He still is the same monstrous force of nature that fans have been watching on screen for decades.
Godzilla #6 officially goes on sale January 7, 2026, from IDW Publishing, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most emotional and defining moments in kaiju history.
