On June 18, 2023, the Titan submersible broke apart during a dive to the Titanic site, killing all five people inside. Christine Dawood lost her husband, Shahzada Dawood, 48, and her son, Suleman, 19, instantly.

Christine is now sharing her story in a new film, Implosion: The Titan Sub Disaster, as the two-year mark of the event nears. Later this year, the U.S. Coast Guard is expected to share its final report from the investigation. But Dawood says nothing can bring back her loved ones.
They’re never going to come back. Their voices are still in the house, their memories are in the house. No matter what the investigation is, the rooms are still empty.
Dawood said in the documentary, which was released on May 28.
Along with the Dawoods, the tragedy also took the lives of Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, and French diver and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
In late June 2023, pieces of the Titan were found on the Atlantic Ocean floor by investigators. Dawood told the BBC that she was first meant to go on the trip with her husband, but let her son take her place ‘because he really wanted to go.’
She and her daughter Alina, who was 17 at the time, were on a support ship when contact with the Titan was lost, according to the BBC.
Thinking back on the deadly trip, she is surprised by the mindset of the people who planned and carried out the journey.
This arrogance of the people in charge – when they think they’re above everything, that really gets to me. Like why is ego and arrogance more important than safety? The irony is not lost on me that the Titanic sunk for exactly the same reason. History repeats itself.
Dawood said
After the tragedy, Dawood said losing her husband and son has deeply changed who she is.
I think I will never be the same. I don’t think that anybody who goes through loss and such a trauma can ever be the same.
she said
Dawood said that one specific message from officials gave her comfort after the tragedy.
One of the most important things that came out for me was when the Coast Guard also assured us as a family that we couldn’t have known. For me that was – yeah, I guess the most important reassurance they could have given me.
she said
Now, she hopes to move forward, knowing the investigation results won’t change her life now. Dawood hinted that the person behind the deadly trip can’t be held responsible anymore, seemingly referring to CEO Stockton Rush without saying his name.
We’re not looking for blaming. We all know who the culprit is. [But] it’s not changing anything, does it? The culprit died with them, right? So who am I to blame?
