With “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” set to hit theaters next week, director Tim Burton is skeptical about the possibility of a third film in the iconic series. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 66-year-old director expressed doubt about his involvement in any potential future sequel, joking that he would be nearly 100 years old if it took another 36 years to make.
Burton explained that his decision to return for the sequel stemmed from his interest in exploring the character Lydia Deetz, portrayed by Winona Ryder, in the context of aging and life changes. He noted that as he has gotten older, he has become more interested in themes related to relationships, family, and personal growth areas that resonated with him when revisiting the character.
“I felt it was more appropriate to make this film now, rather than in 1989,” Burton shared. He hinted that his deeper understanding of life’s changes played a significant role in his decision to direct the sequel.
The Future of the Franchise Remains Uncertain
Although the upcoming film, featuring returning characters and newcomers like Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci, has generated excitement, Burton’s involvement in any future installments seems unlikely. He emphasized that while he enjoyed revisiting the world of “Beetlejuice,” he might not be interested in directing a third installment, should it ever happen.
Beetlejuice is now on Netflix, just in time for the upcoming sequel hitting theaters soon.
Fans eager for “Beetlejuice 3” may have to wait and see how “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” performs before any further plans are solidified. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to the film’s release on September 6, which brings a blend of classic Burton-style practical effects and a new, updated take on the beloved characters.
