“I’ve finished up to the third act. Next, I’ll complete the third act, and after that, I’ll go back to fix and improve everything.”
Tim Allen and the gang are already gearing up for Toy Story 5. In a recent chat with Collider, Allen shared that he recently spent five hours recording for his role as Buzz Lightyear. While he couldn’t share any details about the story, he hinted that it’s a “really clever” idea.
While talking about continuing the beloved Pixar series, which also features Tom Hanks as the voice of Woody, Tim Allen explained,
I don’t think it’s just about making money. Of course, they want it to do well, but that’s not the main reason. If they didn’t have an amazing script, they wouldn’t have made it, and they wouldn’t have asked me and Tom to be part of it.
It’s a really smart story, I feel so lucky to play Buzz Lightyear, honestly. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I think the movie is about a year away. I’ve worked on it up to the third act so far. Next, we’ll finish the third act, then go back to fix and polish things. After that, I’ll record my lines about five more times. The story is really good—one of the best.

The first Toy Story came out in 1995 and became a huge success, earning over $390 million worldwide. The story, about toys that come to life, touched hearts with its themes of growing up. It led to three more sequels and a spin-off called Lightyear in 2022. This movie, which tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear as an animated human, featured Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz instead of Tim Allen.

In a 2022 interview with Extra, Tim Allen explained why he didn’t voice Buzz in Lightyear. He said the movie wasn’t connected to the Buzz Lightyear toy he plays.
We talked about the idea years ago, I even mentioned back then, ‘That would be a really fun movie to make.’
Allen shared
This was made by a completely different team that wasn’t involved in the original movies, The story is great, but it doesn’t really feel connected to the toy version of Buzz. It doesn’t relate to my character at all. I wish there was a stronger connection.
Tim Allen explained
Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026, with longtime franchise contributor Andrew Stanton directing.
