HBO’s The Penguin is popular with both fans and reviewers. The show is about The Penguin, a bad guy from The Batman, but with a twist. His name in this version is Oz Cobb, and he’s trying to take control of the crime scene in Gotham City.
Instead of feeling like a superhero story, it’s more like a crime show, similar to The Sopranos.
Critics love it, with a 94% approval rating, and viewers give it a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Episode 4 has been rated the highest so far!
Show | Episode | IMDB Rating |
---|---|---|

The Penguin | S1.E4 – Cent’Anni | 9.5 |
Smallville | S5.E12 – Reckoning | 9.4 |
Watchmen | S1.E8 – A God Walks into Abar | 9.4 |
The newest episode of The Penguin is one of the highest-rated episodes ever for a DC Comics live-action show. It has an excellent 9.5 rating on IMDB! Only two episodes, one from Arrow and one from The Flash, have slightly higher ratings at 9.6.
This means that The Penguin’s fourth episode is loved even more than episodes from shows like Smallville, Watchmen, Peacemaker, and Gotham. With so much love from viewers, it’s worth checking out why this episode of The Penguin has become such a big hit.

In episode 4 of The Penguin, we learn how Sofia Falcone becomes a villain. Through flashbacks, we see that when Sofia was younger, she found out from a journalist that her dad, Carmine Falcone, is actually a bad guy who hurts women, including her mom.
Sadly, Sofia’s driver Oz Cobb tells Carmine what she found out. Carmine kills the journalist and makes it look like Sofia did all the terrible things. She’s declared too crazy to go on trial and is sent to Arkham Asylum, where she’s poorly treated for ten years by both the staff and the other prisoners.
What makes Sofia’s story even sadder is that her brother, Alberto, was the only one in her family who supported her, but Oz killed him earlier in the show. In the second part of the episode, Sofia gets her revenge on her family.
She spares her little cousin Gia and Johnny Viti, an important helper because she might need him later. She uses gas to get rid of the rest of her family. Now, Sofia plans to go after Oz since he’s the one who got her locked up, killed her brother, and is standing in her way of taking over the Falcone family’s power.
Interestingly, the only episodes with higher ratings than The Penguin are from the Arrowverse. In Arrow season 5, episode 23, Oliver Queen fights Adrian Chase to save his son.
To win, Oliver teams up with some old enemies, like Deathstroke, Captain Boomerang, Nyssa Al Ghul, and Malcolm Merlyn. This episode is super exciting because it brings back a lot of the show’s past villains in a cool way!
While Arrow’s top-rated episode builds on years of story, The Flash’s highly-rated episode comes from its first season. It follows the usual villain-of-the-week setup but moves the more significant story forward with surprises about the Reverse Flash and a shocking fake death.
Like The Penguin episode 4, these episodes are made even better by great acting and how much the audience connects with them.
