HBO has shared its long-term plan for The Last of Us ahead of its return on HBO and Max. Fans watching Season 2 this year will likely be halfway through the series.
According to Deadline, HBO’s head of drama, Francesca Orsi, spoke about the show’s future during The White Lotus Season 3 premiere. While nothing is final yet, the plan is to end The Last of Us after four seasons. However, this could change later. For now, the goal is to wrap up the story by Season 4.
We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons, I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.
Orsi said

Each episode of The Last of Us is huge, requiring a lot of time and money to create. While the plan is to wrap up the show in four seasons, that could change if it remains popular. New ideas might come up by the time Season 4 arrives, possibly extending the series.
For now, co-creator Neil Druckmann has a clear vision for the story’s direction. However, he isn’t certain how many seasons it will take to reach the end.
We have a plan, We know what we need to do going forward, but we couldn’t tell you right now exactly how many episodes or how many seasons it would take to get there.
he told Entertainment Weekly
Tens of millions of people liked it week after week after week, and that’s a number that’s hard to get our minds around. We are accountable to them and we think our job is to continue to do what we did, which is to challenge people and to delight them, surprise them, and make them feel and provoke thought within them.
Co-creator Crag Mazin added,
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are returning in The Last of Us Season 2 as Joel and Ellie. Gabriel Luna is also back as Joel’s brother, Tommy. The new season will introduce fresh faces, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Danny Ramirez as Manny.
You can watch The Last of Us Season 1 on Max right now. Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO and Max in April 2025.
