“The Last of Us” returned to HBO for its second season on Sunday night and was watched by 5.3 million people for the Season 2 premiere.
That’s 13% more than the first episode of Season 1, which had 4.7 million viewers in January 2023. These numbers are based on Nielsen’s count of people who watched on HBO’s cable channel and Warner Bros. Discovery’s own numbers for streams on Max.

WBD also shared that many people rewatched the show, with Season 1’s streaming views jumping 150% last week compared to the week before.
Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, “The Last of Us” became a big hit for HBO as soon as it started. It had the second-highest number of viewers for an HBO premiere in over ten years.
The show’s second episode was watched by 5.7 million people, making it HBO’s biggest-ever jump in viewers between a first and second episode. It kept doing well each week, with the audience growing almost every episode.
The finale reached a season-high of 8.2 million viewers. After including 90 days of delayed viewing, the show averaged 32 million viewers for the season.
Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.
