Lionsgate’s The Housemaid is approaching a major global box office milestone, with the film on track to surpass $200 million worldwide, making it the fifth movie directed by Paul Feig to cross that threshold.
The adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel is expected to pass $100 million domestically by Friday, after already surpassing $100 million overseas earlier this week. The achievement follows Feig’s previous $200M-plus hits, including Bridesmaids, Spy, The Heat, and Ghostbusters.
The psychological thriller stars Amanda Seyfried as a wealthy but unstable housewife who, alongside her husband played by Brandon Sklenar, hires a mysterious young woman portrayed by Sydney Sweeney to live and work as their maid. The situation quickly spirals into chaos.
With its current trajectory, The Housemaid is about $20 million away from surpassing Sweeney’s 2023 hit Anyone But You ($220.3M) to become her second-highest grossing film globally, behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ($392.1M).
Feig’s cumulative global box office as a director now exceeds $1.4 billion, with Bridesmaids remaining his top-earning film at $324.8 million worldwide.
The movie also marks Lionsgate’s second $200M-plus global release of the 2025–2026 cycle, following Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which crossed $241 million worldwide last month. Lionsgate continues to license international territories to help finance its theatrical releases.
A sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, has already been announced and is based on McFadden’s follow-up novel. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine is adapting the script, with Feig expected to return as director. Sweeney and Michele Morrone are also in talks to reprise their roles.
After four weeks in release, The Housemaid continues to show strong box office holds following its Christmas debut and has now rolled out across 66 international territories. The film recently topped the UK box office, outperforming Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2.
The project was produced by Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Feig, with executive producers including Sweeney, Seyfried, and McFadden.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson praised the film’s success, stating, “The Housemaid demonstrates what can be accomplished when the right stars — Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins — are matched with brilliant filmmakers and captivating material, with it all coming together to create a truly compelling moviegoing experience and an undeniable appetite for more. Paul Feig surpassed expectations by delivering a thriller that’s everything audiences have been asking for. Early on, our team — particularly the women at Lionsgate — recognized Freida McFadden’s trilogy as exceptional cinematic material before it became a literary phenomenon. Congratulations to our outstanding cast and filmmakers and the entire Lionsgate team.”
