It’s a tough day for DC Comics fans. After news broke that The Batman Part II has been delayed until 2027, James Gunn stepped forward to explain the reason behind the delay. In a post on Threads, Gunn revealed that the script for the movie isn’t finished yet.
It’s been almost three years since The Batman hit theaters, and fans everywhere have been eagerly waiting to see Robert Pattinson return as the famous vigilante. Sadly, the wait to revisit Gotham City just got longer. Gunn’s full statement reads:
Yes, it’s true. The only reason for the delay is that the script isn’t finished yet (if you’ve been following me, you probably already guessed that). Matt is focused on making the best movie possible, and it’s hard to predict exactly how long writing the script will take. Once the script is ready, it usually takes about two years to handle pre-production, filming, and editing for big movies like this.
Earlier this year, Entertainment Weekly shared that Matt Reeves had finished writing the script for The Batman: Part II. However, that report has been updated after James Gunn gave more details about the situation.
The sequel was originally planned to release in theaters in 2025 but is now set to premiere on October 1, 2027. By the time fans see Bruce Wayne’s next adventure, more than five years will have passed since the first movie came out.

The first Batman movie introduced Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, following his efforts to stop The Riddler (played by Paul Dano). The film also featured Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell and became a huge hit, earning $772 million worldwide.
Earlier this year, the story expanded with The Penguin TV series, which set up challenges Bruce Wayne will face in his next big-screen adventure. The show hasn’t been canceled or renewed yet, as Matt Reeves is still figuring out the future of this universe.
James Gunn is busy building the new DC Universe, which kicked off this month with Creature Commandos. As the studio head, alongside Peter Safran, he’s also helping with plans for The Batman: Part II. So far, The Batman is considered an “Elseworlds” story, meaning it’s separate from the main DC Universe. There are also plans for a new Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, but that has reportedly been delayed too.
While fans wait for Bruce Wayne’s next adventure, Gunn is working on other exciting movies like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Clayface, all set to release in the next few years.
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Meanwhile, the first The Batman movie is streaming on Max.
