The team behind The Accountant has shared their thoughts on a possible third movie before the sequel’s release. Gavin O’Connor directed the first film in 2016, which followed an accountant who secretly handled money for criminals. Ben Affleck played the main role, and nearly ten years later, he is returning for The Accountant 2.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Affleck and O’Connor talked about The Accountant 3. O’Connor said he has been thinking about another sequel for years. Affleck added that they need to “earn another movie” before making it happen. Check out the full quotes from Affleck and O’Connor below:
O’Connor: I have a lot of thoughts about what to do with the third. I’ve been thinking about it for a lot of years.
Affleck: I’m keenly aware of the fact that you kind of have to earn another movie. The worst pitfall is to store a bunch of your good ideas for the next installment. If you don’t create an interest demand the first time out there, you’re just going to be playing that to an empty house.
The Accountant had a big audience when it first came out. The 2016 thriller was made with a budget of around $44 million but earned over $155 million worldwide, making it a success. Critics gave it mixed reviews, with a low 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences liked it more, giving it a 77% score. Even with this mixed response, the movie still secured a sequel.

The long wait for the sequel makes its success uncertain. Fans have wanted it for years, and Ben Affleck is the main reason people are excited. But since nearly ten years have passed, some viewers might have lost interest. Whether The Accountant 3 happens will likely depend on how well the second movie does when it hits theaters on April 25. If it performs well, director Gavin O’Connor might get a chance to bring his ideas to life.
If The Accountant 3 happens, O’Connor and his team should work faster than they did with the second movie. The sequel is coming out almost ten years after the first film, and another long wait could make audiences lose interest. There’s still more to explore in The Accountant world, but it might not be a story people will keep waiting for years to see.
