After battling for House Targaryen, Matt Smith is now ready to take on a new fight in a galaxy far, far away. According to Deadline, the House of the Dragon star has joined Ryan Gosling in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Mia Goth is also part of the cast, with Shawn Levy directing. The script was written by Jonathan Tropper.
Lucasfilm and Smith’s team haven’t responded to requests for comment. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall, with the movie set to release on May 28, 2027. While Smith’s exact role hasn’t been revealed, sources say he’ll play one of the villains.
Casting has been active in recent weeks, with Levy meeting several actors for the role. Insiders say the team chose Smith to portray the next major villain in the Star Wars universe. Starfighter was first announced in April during the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo. The story takes place five years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, which ended the Skywalker saga and is currently the latest film in the timeline.
Smith recently finished the second season of HBO’s popular Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon. Coming up, he stars alongside Austin Butler in Sony and Darren Aronofsky’s thriller Caught Stealing. He’s also appearing in the limited series The Death of Bunny Monro.
