Lucasfilm is set to bring Star Wars back to theaters regularly. With The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapping up production, a brand-new Star Wars trilogy has now been announced.
Deadline reports that Star Wars Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg has signed a deal with Lucasfilm to create a new Star Wars movie trilogy. Kinberg will write the scripts and produce each movie, working with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy.
While some sources suggest this trilogy could continue the Skywalker Saga as episodes 10-12, others believe it will launch an entirely new storyline. Neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has commented on the details.
Kinberg previously collaborated with Lucasfilm to create the animated series Star Wars Rebels alongside Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. This popular show aired on Disney XD for four seasons, from 2014 to 2018. Set over a decade after Star Wars: Episode III, it followed the Ghost crew as they carried out secret missions against the Empire, mainly around Lothal.
Kinberg also served as a creative consultant on the 2015 movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens and received a “Thanks” credit for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016.

Kinberg is now the second Rebels creator to join a live-action Star Wars movie project. Dave Filoni, another Rebels co-creator, is set to direct a film set in the New Republic era. This movie will combine storylines from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.
Although the plot is still a secret, rumors suggest it might be inspired by the Star Wars Legends novel Heir to the Empire, where the New Republic battles Grand Admiral Thrawn to prevent him from restoring the Empire. Season 1 of Ahsoka has already hinted at this storyline, and fans are eager to see if Season 2 will build further toward a possible adaptation of Heir to the Empire in Star Wars canon.
Isn’t Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Movie Episode 10?
Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy might end up being Episodes 10, 11, and 12 in the Skywalker Saga. If this happens, it could mean a shift in Lucasfilm’s plans, as many believed that the upcoming Rey Skywalker movie with Daisy Ridley would be Episode 10. In this new movie, Ridley’s character, Rey, will work to rebuild the Jedi Order about 15 years after the events of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct, marking her first live-action feature film.
The project doesn’t have a writer after Steven Knight left in October 2024. Lucasfilm is actively searching for a new writer, but because of Knight’s exit, production has been delayed and likely won’t start until sometime in 2025 at the earliest.
