Star Wars hasn’t had a new movie in theaters since 2019. Yesterday, the director James Mangold said his movie, ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ (a working title), might start filming as soon as next year. This surprised fans because many thought the next movie would be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy featuring Daisy Ridley’s character Rey.
Fans have been calling that movie ‘The New Jedi Order,’ they expected it to come out before another Star Wars movie planned for May 2026 called ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ directed by Jon Favreau.

Then, some disappointing news came out this morning: Steven Knight, the writer who had been working on the film for a long time (known for “Peaky Blinders” and “Spencer”), has left the project. Fans had been guessing this might happen for months.
This morning, anxious headlines said “Star Wars” is having problems again, with delays and writers leaving the new Rey movie, which made it seem like there’s a lot to worry about.

But Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, doesn’t seem worried. We talked to her this morning about her new movie “Magpie” for an episode of our podcast, The Discourse, and she said it’s all just part of how movies get made.

Before getting into the main questions, The Discourse podcast host, Mike DeAngelo, jokingly asked Daisy Ridley if she would be in a movie he called “Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money” (not a real title) and if she was under contract to keep it secret.
The actress blurted out with a healthy lol “Hahaha! Spaceballs 2! No, you’re the first person to ask me that. Well, a friend of mine is—I don’t know if it’s public knowledge, but a friend of mine might be involved in the certain ‘Spaceballs’ thing. Maybe I spoke to them about something.
she laughed
Then, The Discourse asked her about the recent news of Steven Knight leaving, but Daisy Ridley didn’t seem bothered at all (and if reports are right, she’s known about it for a while).

As for the rumored release date of Christmas 2026 for “The New Jedi Order” movie? Ridley said that date isn’t for their movie, and they don’t have a set date yet.
We don’t have a date, I think the creative process is one that is really a journey.
she said matter-of-factly, explaining what’s happened behind the scenes a little bit.
Ridley didn’t say if she’s read a new script or knew the exact direction of the story, but her excitement hinted she might learn something. She also mentioned that Lucasfilm isn’t rushing the project and is taking time to ensure it’s done well.
And I’m really genuinely excited. And I have said I’m very excited, but I really do mean I’m excited about what’s coming. And I think we really have the luxury of making sure that this is the right.
So, there’s no set date yet until there’s actually something ready to schedule?
Yes!” she exclaimed.” So when everything is ready to go, we will be going, and it’s very—yeah, it’s good.
Ridley stayed quiet after that, but her excitement felt real. Maybe in the next few months, we’ll find out who will be in charge of writing the story.
So, does that mean Mangold’s movie could take the open December 2026 release date? It’s possible, but if we’ve learned anything, Lucasfilm cares more about getting the story right before setting release dates.
