The creative team behind Star Trek: Prodigy wanted to create a new series that would attract a new generation of children to the larger Star Trek fandom. But by the end of Season 2, the show achieved much more than that. I believe it has delivered the best serialized Trek story ever with the latest twenty episodes. Yes, it’s even better than the previous seasons of Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, and any other serialized arc. It’s that amazing, and everyone involved deserves a Season 3 and more.
As fans eagerly wait for new Trek shows and start watching this season on Netflix, I hope they notice one thing. Every story detail, reference, and nod in this season shows great care and makes the story even better. It’s one of the best seasons ever, and I’ll explain why in my spoiler-free review. Also, like the Hagemans suggested when talking about a renewal, I hope to convince those who haven’t watched it yet to start tuning in.
Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Mixes Typical Trek Tropes with Seamless Storytelling
When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds came out, it looked like the producers found the best way to tell stories in the Star Trek series. They used serialized character arcs, which let them tell different stories in each episode while still showing character growth and progress. It worked so well that even Discovery copied it in its last season.
Prodigy Season 2 shows that serialized storytelling works excellently in Star Trek and should be the way to tell future stories. The story fits typical Trek ideas naturally, and I was amazed that nothing ever felt out of place or forced during the twenty episodes.
The show does a great job of showing a younger audience what Star Trek can offer. Veteran fans, like me enjoyed many callbacks and new ideas. Prodigy also expanded on concepts that were only mentioned in other shows. If you love Voyager, there’s plenty to enjoy this season besides the Chakotay and Janeway story. There’s something for every Trek fan this season, as long as they’re willing to try it. For fans with no new Trek shows to watch right now, I wonder why anyone wouldn’t give it a chance.
Prodigy Season 2: Legacy Characters Return to Play Key Roles
When I first talked to the Hageman brothers about Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, they hinted that more legacy characters would return beyond Robert Picardo’s Doctor. They didn’t say how these characters would play big roles in the story. And really, their presence never feels unnecessary.
The Doctor isn’t just in the story; he plays a significant role. I’d bet Robert Picardo recorded his lines in more than one session, although he’s so talented that if he said he didn’t, I’d believe him. The EMH was awesome in Voyager; as expected, he shines here too.
