After three years, are you ready to play again? After Christmas, Squid Game returns to Netflix for Season 2 on December 26. The show’s creators announced that the third season will be its last.
The second season of the Korean drama series is returning with some old and new characters. Season 3 will follow in 2025, which will be the last one. Check out the teaser for Season 2 below:
Squid Game became a global hit after it launched on September 17, 2021. In just 28 days, people watched it for more than 1.65 billion hours, reaching 111 million accounts. It was the first Netflix series to get over 100 million viewers at its launch.
In the second season, created by writer, director, and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) continues his story after making shocking choices at the end of Season 1. Instead of going to the United States, he stays and starts an important chase with a big purpose.

In Season 1 [SPOILER ALERT], Seong Gi-hun is deeply in debt when he gets an invitation to the games. After winning amazingly, he decides to pay those behind the deadly competition for their actions.
Lee Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hun. He is joined by Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Front Man, the leader of the game; Wi Ha-jun, who plays Hwang Jun-ho, a detective searching for his brother in the game; and Gong Yoo, who plays the Recruiter, the one who invited Gi-hun to play the game.
New players in the game include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun, along with Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.
Season 3 was filmed right after Season 2, so it will come out in 2025. This means fans won’t have to wait as long as they did between the first two seasons.
Firstman Studio produced the series, with Kim Ji-yeon also as an executive producer.
“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 received an amazing response worldwide, and many unexpected things have happened since then,” Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote in a letter (see it below). “On the first day of filming Season 2, I thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.’ It felt almost unreal. I wonder how you will feel returning to Squid Game after three years, too.”
He added, “Seong Gi-hun, who promised revenge at the end of Season 1, comes back and joins the game again. Will he get his revenge? The Front Man won’t be an easy opponent this time, either. Their intense battle will continue into the series finale with Season 3 coming next year. I’m excited to see the idea of Squid Game grow and reach the end of this story. We’ll do our best to bring you another thrilling adventure.”
