The first Rotten Tomatoes score for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out, and fans are loving it! The movie got a super positive response, making it the highest-rated film in the series so far.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 kicked off on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 85% score, much higher than the first two movies. The original Sonic the Hedgehog had a 64% rating, while the sequel scored 69%. Both films, however, had great audience scores of 96% and 93%.
Matching those audience numbers will be a tough task for Sonic 3. As the movie hits theaters this weekend, it hasn’t received an audience score yet, but winning over critics is a fantastic start for the sequel. Meanwhile, the Knuckles spinoff series on Paramount+ has a 75% score from critics and a 67% from viewers.
It gives fans everything they’ve been hoping for, the references are fun, and the final part is packed with more action than most movies this year. Keanu’s Shadow is a great new character for the series, and Jim Carrey goes all out to make the fans happy.
says Austin Burke from Flick Fan Nation.
Siddhant Adlakha from Inverse called the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie a big step up from the earlier ones. He said,
The first two Sonic movies felt dull and lifeless, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a total game-changer. It fixes almost all the problems from before and even takes them on directly.

Many reviews highlight Jim Carrey’s incredible performance as Robotnik, calling him the standout of the movie. Cynthia Vinney from Looper said Carrey is the true “star” of the film. Custodio Guerrero from Sensacine added,
Even if you’re not a Sonic fan, Jim Carrey alone makes the movie worth watching. His expressions, energy, and humor feel just like his iconic roles in Ace Ventura and The Grinch.
Not everyone loved the movie. Howard Waldstein from CBR wasn’t as impressed as some other critics. He wrote,
Kids will probably have fun watching Sonic 3, but it’s hard to take the movie seriously when it doesn’t take itself seriously. Still, if Jeff Fowler and the team keep improving, maybe Sonic 7 could be amazing.
Jeff Fowler directed Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington wrote the script. The voice cast includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. The movie also stars Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, and Shemar Moore.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives in theaters on December 20, 2024. Don’t miss the post-credits scenes—they’re worth sticking around for!
