Sofía Vergara has big plans for the future of Modern Family. Four years after the show ended, Vergara said she’d “die” to be back on set with her TV family. She knows it’s still too early for the Pritchett, Dunphy, and Tucker families to come back, but she jokes with her former TV husband, Ed O’Neill, about a possible new version of the show. Modern Family ran for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020.
Vergara told Variety that after she saw O’Neill, 78, in Clipped, she joked with him, “You look really old.” She mentioned that they often talk about his age when discussing the show.
Vergara said, “I always tease him, ‘Ed, don’t die! If we make a sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest. You can’t be dead!’” She was talking about how she jokes with the actor who played Jay Pritchett, her TV husband’s role.
The Griselda star said she would love to make a “TV movie” if the cast got together again, sharing that it would be “so much fun.”

Sarah Hyland, who played Haley Dunphy on the show, also showed interest in returning. She told PEOPLE in June,
“I love the cast with all my heart and soul… I would really love to be back with everyone.”
She mentioned that the storyline would impact her decision. “I’d want to know what’s happening with Haley,” she said. “I’d like to see her career and creativity, and I want her to be able to do both.”
Hyland, 33, said she would like to see her character follow in her TV mom Claire’s footsteps. She wants Haley to achieve the same success as Claire, who was an amazing mother, businesswoman, and CEO.
Last November, Vergara brought the cast together for their first reunion since the show ended in 2020. Everyone attended except Ty Burrell.
Vergara told PEOPLE afterward, “It was very special. I flew in from the Bahamas the day before and was exhausted from the event, but it was totally worth it.”
She added that it was “the first time we had all seen each other in almost four years,” which made it “very exciting for all of us.”
Vergara, O’Neill, Bowen, Hyland, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons all attended, along with the showrunners Chris Lloyd and Steve Levitan, whom Stonestreet playfully called the cast’s “two dads.”
Vergara said, “It’s amazing because we always stay connected. Even though we haven’t seen each other in a long time, it felt like we just left the set in 2020.”
