After a highly successful month-long run in theaters around the world, director Ryan Coogler’s movie Sinners is nearing the end of its time on the big screen. The horror film had another great weekend in domestic theaters, although it looks like it won’t quite hit $100 million from international markets.
This reflects a common trend in the film industry where movies led by Black actors often don’t perform as well internationally. Still, Sinners has made up for this by doing exceptionally well in the U.S. It’s close to reaching its last big global earnings milestone.
With nearly $260 million made in the U.S. and about $80 million from other countries, Sinners has brought in a total of $339 million globally. This is more than the $334 million that A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski, earned in 2018.
Sinners is now one of the top 10 highest-earning horror films of all time and is expected to soon beat the $350 million total made by Ridley Scott’s Hannibal. During its run, Sinners made more money than any film from James Wan’s Conjuring series, classics like The Silence of the Lambs, and recent hits like Get Out.

Michael B. Jordan stars in Sinners, playing two roles, and it has also made more than any of the movies in the Creed series. The movie had a production budget of $90 million and was released widely by Warner Bros., showing the studio’s strong support for Coogler’s vision. It was shown in premium IMAX 70 mm format, similar to the way Christopher Nolan’s films are presented.
The movie earned praise for its meaningful story and Ludwig Göransson’s blues-inspired music score. Sinners opened with strong support from both critics and viewers, earning a 97% “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% “verified hot” audience score. Because of the film’s success, Coogler is now one of the top-grossing directors in history, having achieved this with just five movies.

No other director ranked higher has made fewer films. He is already considered one of the best directors of his time and could soon be seen as one of the greatest ever. The success of Sinners will likely give him creative freedom similar to what directors like Nolan and Tarantino enjoy.
You can still catch Sinners in theaters — Warner Bros. has not yet released it for streaming or paid video-on-demand.
