Ryan Coogler’s movie Sinners has been an enormous hit worldwide since it appeared in theaters almost a month ago. One of the things people have loved most about the film is the cast.
With big names like Michael B. Jordan in lead roles, and others like Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Miles Caton in supporting parts, Sinners has one of the best acting teams of the year.
It’s expected to be part of the 2026 Academy Awards conversation. But recently, new details showed that the cast could have been different. Pop singer Halsey was on the podcast In Your Dreams with Owen Thiele. When asked if she had seen the movie, she said no and hinted that she was almost cast in it.
Not yet. I read the script though. I did read the script. There’s not a lot of white-passing Black girls in Hollywood. So I did read the script.
Thiele brought up Hailee Steinfeld, and Halsey confirmed that she was in talks to play the role of Mary, which Steinfeld got in the end. But Halsey agreed that casting Steinfeld “makes perfect sense,” and both of them praised the film. Like many who didn’t follow the film’s marketing before it came out, Thiele and Halsey were surprised to learn Sinners turns into a vampire story. The first part of the movie feels more like a strong and meaningful look at racial issues in the early 1900s.

Still, even though Halsey didn’t land the role of Mary, it’s clear Ryan Coogler and casting director Francine Maisler made all the right choices for the film’s cast. Sinners has earned a nearly perfect 97% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience score on Popcornmeter is also high at 96%. The movie has made over $200 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. hasn’t said yet when Sinners will start streaming, and with how well it’s doing in theaters, they might want to keep it playing a bit longer. But since it’s already been out for four full weekends, it probably won’t be too long before it shows up on VOD platforms.
The movie will first be available to rent or buy on places like Prime Video and Fandango at Home. It will likely cost between $20 and $30 to buy, or $15 to $20 to rent for 48 hours. After Sinners finishes its digital release, it will start streaming on Max and other Warner Bros. films. The reason it’s not on digital yet is because of how well it’s doing in theaters. Warner Bros. wants to maximize the movie’s time on the big screen before moving it online.
