Shawn Mendes has seemingly spoken for the first time about his rumored love triangle with Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello.
In a preview of Thursday’s episode of John Mayer’s SiriusXM show, “How’s Life,” Mendes opened up about a moment in his life when unresolved feelings from a past relationship led to complications while he was dating someone new. “Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes said in the clip.
While he refrained from naming names, the singer reflected on how he handled the situation, admitting, “Maybe instead of two days, I should have told her two weeks ahead of time.” Mayer pushed further, asking Mendes if he felt he had made any missteps, to which the “Stitches” artist responded with a life lesson: “No one gets out of this life without getting hurt and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”
Though Mendes avoided specifics, fans quickly connected his comments to past relationships. Mendes and Cabello famously dated from 2019 to 2021 and were rumored to have briefly reunited in 2023. Their rekindled romance made headlines after their PDA-filled appearance at Coachella and a joint outing to a Taylor Swift Eras Tour show.

Meanwhile, Mendes was also linked to Carpenter in early 2023, with the two spotted together in Los Angeles shortly after Valentine’s Day. However, as Mendes and Cabello appeared to reconcile, Carpenter seemed to address the drama in the opening track of her album, “Taste.” The song includes the pointed lyrics, “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you.”
Cabello also appeared to subtly respond to the rumors, posting a TikTok of herself lip-syncing to her track “June Gloom,” which includes the lines, “She’s cool, I heard / Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures.”
Carpenter went on to date “Saltburn” actor Barry Keoghan, though the two reportedly split earlier this month. Mendes and Cabello, however, reignited reconciliation rumors once again after they were spotted together at the Copa América Final in July.
Mendes’ comments in the SiriusXM interview mark the first time he publicly acknowledged the complexities of his personal relationships, giving fans a rare glimpse into his emotional challenges.
