In an interview with IndieWire, series writer and co-executive producer Mohamad El Masri hinted at time jumps and revealed creator Dan Erickson’s big plan for the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ show.
“Severance” seems to already be planning for Season 3, even though Season 2 hasn’t been released yet. The popular Apple TV+ series, which first aired in 2022, earned 14 Emmy nominations and won two. It was renewed for a second season just days before the Season 1 finale. While Season 2 of Severance is set to release on January 17, 2025, a third season hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Series writer and Season 2 co-executive producer Mohamad El Masri recently shared with IndieWire, while promoting his popular YouTube short film Other Other, that creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller have already “planned out” the full story for the sci-fi workplace drama. (As of now, Apple has not responded to requests for comment.)

El Masri explained that they always planned for future seasons while creating Severance.
Even during Season 2, we talked about the end game and how the show should wrap up. A lot of effort went into that. With a second season, you need to keep the story moving. People are watching, so you have to think about not only how Season 2 can satisfy viewers but also how it sets up Season 3 and beyond.
El Masri hinted that Season 2 will “guide us toward how the series should end.”
I know they were working on Season 3 while still filming Season 2.
He confirmed,
As for whether a possible third season will take another three years to release, like the gap between Seasons 1 and 2, that remains to be seen.
I can’t speak on that. Will it take another 3.5 years for Season 3 to come out? I hope not, as a fan myself. I hope we don’t have to wait that long. But, well, it’s Hollywood.
El Masri responded,

Ben, Dan, and the whole team are perfectionists, and they want the show to be great. If that takes a year, two years, or even three, they’ll take the time needed to make it exactly how they want. It worked for the first season, and they won’t release anything unless they feel it’s amazing.
El Masri added,
However, El Masri admitted that the long gaps between seasons are “crazy.” “
By the time Season 2 comes out in January, it will have been almost 3.5 years since we started writing, which is just wild, even I need to re-watch Season 1 to remember how it all fits together. I’m excited for the audience to do the same and refresh their memories on Season 1’s journey.
he said.
El Masri hinted at a possible time jump in Severance to match the longer writing process, saying,
I’m excited to see if there will be a time jump. I don’t know how the story will connect between Season 3.
However, he admitted,
He explained that series creator Dan Erickson had a clear vision for where the show was headed, even while Season 1 was still in production. Erickson provided a detailed 50-page series guide, developed over five years. While writing Season 2, the team focused on making sure everything in the story had a clear purpose and meaning for the audience.

El Masri said showrunner Dan Erickson has the entire story of Severance planned out, and the writers are responsible for answering the show’s big mysteries, like “what M.D. is,” “what the Lumon workers are doing,” and “what’s hidden in the massive Lumon headquarters.”
El Masri described the show as having a “video-game quality,” where “new areas are discovered,” hinting that Season 2 will explore more of Lumon. Unlike some sci-fi shows like Lost, Severance isn’t “making things up as it goes.” Erickson is “very detailed,” so the writers follow his vision while also adapting, revising, and ensuring that both the “sci-fi elements” and “emotional stories” make sense.
Severance Season 2 will begin on January 17, 2025, on Apple TV+.
