The first episode of Severance Season 2 is full of surprises. Mark (Adam Scott) works hard to bring his Macrodata Refinement team back together, which includes Helly (Britt Lower), Dylan (Zach Cherry), and Irving (John Turturro).
Meanwhile, Ms. Cobel (Patricia Arquette) is no longer part of Lumon—or at least that’s what Milchick (Tramell Tillman) claims, though he isn’t exactly trustworthy. Plus, Helly keeps a big secret from the team: her outie is actually the daughter of Lumon’s CEO, Jame Eagen.
There’s one surprise in the episode that many viewers might have missed if they didn’t pay close attention. Keanu Reeves, known as John Wick, makes a voice cameo. He plays the voice of the Lumon building in the “Lumon is Listening” video that Milchick shows the MDR team.
Dan Erickson, the show’s creator and writer of the premiere, shared in an interview with Collider how they got such a famous actor to be part of the show.
All I can say is that we talked about a couple of different people for that role. We always wanted it to be somebody that people have certain associations with, but also, it had to be a very warm presence. The Lumon building is very friendly in the context of this video, and there’s a friendliness to that particular voice and a heart to that particular voice.
The production team hasn’t shared who else they considered for the role, but it’s tough to think of a voice warmer and friendlier than Keanu Reeves. Known as one of the kindest stars in Hollywood, Reeves’ voice was a perfect fit.
Even though the cheerful video didn’t win over the MDR team—they’re still wary of Lumon’s true motives—fans will definitely smile knowing that the happy, talking building was voiced by Reeves.
What surprises does Season 2 hold? Dan Erickson hasn’t shared much, but he did mention that this season will feel darker than the first. While the 10 episodes will answer some questions, they’ll also bring even more mysteries. Erickson also teased that Milchick will have a bigger role, which is exciting since he’s one of the show’s most puzzling characters.
Ben Stiller, the show’s executive producer and a frequent director, also stayed quiet about Season 2’s secrets. However, he did say that the story focuses on Mark’s journey to figure out who he really is. This suggests we’ll see more of Mark’s outie life and how it connects—or conflicts—with his innie life. Stiller also hinted that the show could go on for at least two more seasons if the story continues to demand it.
Season 2 premiered on January 17, 2025, and new episodes stream every Friday. The finale is set to air on March 21, 2025.
