Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence has shared a hopeful update about the planned revival, after the mixed reactions to the show’s ninth and final season. Scrubs was known as one of the most creative and unique comedies of the 2000s. It originally ended with Season 8, but returned for Season 9 with mostly new characters.
Zach Braff’s JD returned for only six episodes. The new revival is expected to bring back the original feel by focusing on the main cast again.

According to TV Line, Lawrence stood up for season 9, which many fans and critics didn’t like. He said he felt lucky to have made it, and pointed out that the people involved have gone on to do well in their careers.

He also said that if season 9 had been a spinoff, it might not have gotten so much hate, but he gets why people were upset. He ended by saying the reboot will be called Scrubs and will start with Turk and JD.
I hate the narrative, like, ‘Oh, the ninth year sucked.’ No, it didn’t. It’s sour grapes, whatever, I’m so lucky to have done it. I didn’t get to work on [that season] as much, but that writing staff did a great job, and I think Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe and Dave Franco have all gone on to have great careers because they were really good. If it had been a spinoff called Scrubs: Med or Scrubs: Med School, it would not have been judged as harshly, but I understand the business of that [decision]. This one is [also] called Scrubs, and it starts with JD and Turk.
It’s still not clear if the Scrubs reboot will count as season 10 or start fresh with a new story. What is clear, though, is that this new version will go back to its roots, focusing on JD and Turk. Their friendship was always the heart of the show, and Bill Lawrence seems to agree. Bringing the story back to JD and Turk is a smart way to reconnect with what made Scrubs special and to show they’re still key to this world.
The reboot will show both men as adults, dealing with new challenges. Zach Braff has already shared that this version of JD will be more jaded and worn down by the system compared to earlier seasons. It’ll be interesting to see how the show picks up with JD and Turk likely now married, with kids, and still trying to make a difference in the medical field.
The series may also explore the complex US healthcare system and how rules and red tape often complicate matters. To succeed, the reboot needs to hold on to what made the original great.
JD and Turk had amazing chemistry that shaped how they interacted with everyone else. Many old characters might return, but as long as JD and Turk stay in the spotlight, the Scrubs revival has a strong shot at success.
