Scott Foley is excited about coming back for Scream 7, but he’s not sure how his character will fit into the story. The movie’s plot is still unclear, but it will be a direct sequel to the earlier films featuring Sidney Prescott.
Familiar faces like Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), David Arquette (Dewey Riley), and Neve Campbell (Sidney) are returning. This time, Kevin Williamson, the original creator and writer of the first two and fourth movies, is directing the film.
Scott Foley recently appeared on Good Morning America to talk about his role in Will Trent season 3. During the interview, he was asked about returning for Scream 7. He admitted that he doesn’t know how his character, Roman Bridger, will return, even asking others to help him understand by saying, “someone can explain it to me.” You can check out his full comments in the quote and video below.
I’m willing to take a poll here and someone can explain it to me because I don’t know how it works out. Yeah, my character — spoiler alert — 25 years ago, I was the killer in Scream 3. He was brutally taken to town and killed. Now I’m back in Scream 7, and I’m not sure how it’s going to work.
Filming for Scream 7 is already happening and is expected to finish very soon. So, it might surprise some people that Scott Foley still doesn’t know how his return fits into the story. However, franchise fans will recognize this as another way the creative team keeps central plot details a secret. Every Scream movie is known for having multiple scripts and changing storylines to avoid leaks and keep the cast guessing.

Scott Foley’s big reveal in Scream 3 is a well-known example of how behind-the-scenes changes affected the movie’s story. The third film is among the most debated in the series, mainly because some fans felt that Roman acting alone as Ghostface didn’t add up. Since the ending was rewritten and reshot multiple times—especially to bring back Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid, who was missing from the original ending, and to show Sidney nearly dying at Roman’s hands—it makes sense that Foley is used to being kept in the dark.

Roman’s return in Scream 7 will most likely happen through a nightmarish hallucination that Sidney experiences. The franchise has used this idea before, not just in Scream 3 with Sidney, but also in the last two movies where Melissa Barrera’s Sam saw visions of Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis. Since both David Arquette and Matthew Lillard are coming back as Dewey and Stu, even though their characters died, it seems likely that Sidney will be haunted by guilt-driven visions of all three.
No matter how Scott Foley’s return is revealed in Scream 7, the fact that he doesn’t know much about his role makes it seem like he’s being saved for a big moment in the movie. It’s hard to believe they would change the story to say he survived being shot in the head, mainly since other characters who died that way have stayed dead. However, with Sidney’s daughter and a new family in the story, it’s possible that new Ghostface murders could lead to an emotional or spiritual confrontation between her and Roman.
