Sometimes, actors understand that their job includes certain scenes, but some might not be right for their kids to see or go against their morals.
Marvel’s Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson clarified why she turned down one particular job. And this wasn’t a tiny role; it was a huge opportunity. But even the hardest film role wouldn’t have caused the problems this job could have. So, what role did Johansson turn down?
The job was to be the voice of OpenAI’s chatbot. Now, the decision makes a lot of sense. Imagine opening up an AI chatbot and hearing your mom’s voice. Johansson explained to the New York Times,
“I stayed away from the AI discussion, which made the offer very disturbing.”
“I was like, ‘How did I get involved?’ It was crazy. I was so angry.” Johansson played the voice of an AI in the 2013 film Her with Joaquin Phoenix, where the main character falls in love with an AI.
But acting as an AI in a movie is very different from being the voice of a real AI system. She said, “I didn’t want to be part of that. It went against my core values. I don’t like to kiss and tell.”
“He [OpenAI CEO Sam Altman] came to me with this offer, and I only told my husband. I thought it would be strange for my kids. I try to be mindful of them.”
She added
Johansson also talked about the dangers of AI, such as creating deepfake videos. Even though it’s illegal in many places, this danger can affect anyone, especially public figures, and even more so, women.
“If your ex-partner shares revenge deepfake videos, it can ruin your life,” said Johansson. “Technology moves faster than we can handle, and you see its effects everywhere, especially on young people.”
She added, “This technology is coming at us like a giant wave.”
