American swimmer Ryan Murphy got a special surprise from his pregnant wife Bridget Konttinen at the Paris 2024 Olympics after he won bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke, his third Olympic medal in that event.
Ryan Murphy had an exciting Monday. First, he won bronze in the 100-meter backstroke, earning a medal in his third consecutive Olympics.
Later, while celebrating his seventh Olympic medal, Ryan Murphy saw his wife, Bridget Konttinen, in the stands at Paris La Défense Arena. She held a sign that said, “Ryan, it’s a girl,” revealing the gender of their baby due in January.
“We had been guessing for a couple of weeks what the baby’s gender would be, so it was a great way to find out,” Murphy said. “It made the night even more special
“We both thought it was going to be a boy. Everyone we talked to thought it would be a boy, too.”
Ryan Murphy, from Jacksonville, Florida, is a big Jaguars fan. He mentioned that quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his wife, Marissa Mowry, also expect a girl. Murphy joked that he hopes their daughters can become friends.
As he prepares to become a dad for the first time, Murphy said his daughter’s arrival will change what he values most.
“It’s really exciting to find out I’m going to be a girl dad,” Murphy said. “Until now, swimming has been the most important thing in my life. Every big decision I made was about swimming. But that’s going to change. Everything will now be for my little girl.”
Murphy, who won three gold medals in Rio 2016 and gold, silver, and bronze in Tokyo in 2021, almost won another gold medal. He finished the race in 52.39 seconds, just behind Italy’s Thomas Ceccon, who won 52 seconds, and China’s Xu Jiayu, who took silver with 52.32 seconds.
Murphy will have a chance to win his eighth Olympic medal later this week in the 200-meter backstroke.
