It’s been nearly 20 years since Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart brought Edward Cullen and Bella Swan to life in the first Twilight Saga movie. Even after all this time, some people still criticize the series, blaming it for “ruining” the vampire genre.
While talking to GQ Spain, Pattinson shared his thoughts on the ongoing hate toward the 2008 film.
I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre,’ Are you still stuck on that s**t? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.
he said. He then suggested it might be time to let go of the past, adding
The Twilight movies have recently become popular again. When asked about this renewed love for the films, Robert Pattinson shared,
I find it a fascinating phenomenon. I mean, I can’t believe it. I think this renaissance has emerged in Korea, and it’s happened a bit like with K-pop, which took off in Korea, but then seduced a young Western population. I find it hard to believe the cultural relevance that these films maintain because they are so old.
The Twilight Saga movies are based on Stephenie Meyer’s hit book series. The story follows Bella Swan, a high schooler who moves to Forks, Washington, to live with her dad. She meets Edward Cullen, a vampire, and they fall in love. But their relationship faces challenges from the supernatural world, including rival vampires threatening the Cullen family’s peace and Bella’s friendship with Jacob Black, a werewolf played by Taylor Lautner.

Twilight hit theaters in November 2008. While critics gave it mixed reviews, audiences loved it, and the movie earned $407 million worldwide. Thanks to its huge success, the rest of Stephenie Meyer’s books were adapted into movies: New Moon in 2009, Eclipse in 2010, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 in 2011, and Breaking Dawn – Part 2 in 2012. Each movie performed differently but found its own success. Netflix is working on an animated reboot series called Midnight Sun.
Midnight Sun retells the original Twilight story from Edward Cullen’s perspective. It’s based on Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 novel of the same name. Sinead Daly is writing the Netflix series, with Meyer serving as an executive producer through her company, Fickle Fish Films, alongside Meghan Hibbett. Other producers include Daly, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen from Temple Hill Entertainment, as well as Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey from Picturestart.
Currently, all five Twilight Saga movies are available to stream on Hulu. As for Midnight Sun, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet.
