Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo are offering a glimpse into Robert Downey Jr.’s intense preparation for his highly anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — this time not as Iron Man, but as the infamous Doctor Doom.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Joe Russo praised Downey’s creative process and dedication to developing the character of Victor Von Doom. “It’s a very intense process developing the character,” Russo said. “He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in.”
Downey’s approach, according to Russo, goes far beyond memorizing lines. “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas,” Joe added. “I think he just loves really rich three-dimensional characters, and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”
His brother Anthony Russo echoed the sentiment, noting that Downey’s commitment reflects his artistry. “That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is,” he said.
Downey’s return to the MCU was officially announced at Comic-Con 2024, where Marvel confirmed that he would portray Doctor Doom the iconic Fantastic Four villain in the next two Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Russo brothers, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, are once again leading Marvel’s next cinematic chapter.
Set for release on May 1, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will precede Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for May 2027.
Downey’s casting marks a bold new direction for the MCU following the Endgame era. According to Deadline, Chris Evans is also set to return to the Marvel universe in a yet-undisclosed role, while Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Agent Carter.
Downey’s transformation from the beloved Tony Stark to Marvel’s most complex villain signals one of the franchise’s most intriguing creative risks to date. With his meticulous preparation and the Russo brothers’ proven blockbuster pedigree, Avengers: Doomsday is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases in Marvel history.
