After a successful theatrical run and an initial streaming debut on MGM+, Project Hail Mary is finally making its way to Prime Video. The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi blockbuster will begin streaming on Friday, July 3, giving subscribers another chance to experience one of 2026’s biggest films.
Prime Video confirmed the release date and also unveiled a new trailer highlighting Gosling’s journey through deep space as Ryland Grace, a former molecular biologist and middle school teacher who awakens aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As his memories gradually return, Grace realizes he has been sent on a mission to save the Sun from a catastrophic cooling event that threatens humanity’s survival.
Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Following its theatrical debut in March 2026, Project Hail Mary earned widespread praise from critics and audiences while grossing more than $683 million worldwide, making it one of the year’s highest-grossing releases.
Many fans were surprised when the movie first landed on MGM+ instead of Prime Video, despite being produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with Amazon MGM Studios distributing it domestically and Sony Pictures handling international distribution.
According to previous reports, the streaming rollout followed the studio’s release strategy. Because Project Hail Mary received a full theatrical release, it entered MGM+’s pay-one streaming window before becoming available on Prime Video. The Oscar-winning American Fiction followed a similar release pattern.
The extended theatrical window proved beneficial for the film’s box office performance. Produced on a reported $248 million budget, Project Hail Mary nearly reached $700 million worldwide, surpassing the global earnings of Ridley Scott’s adaptation of The Martian, another film based on an Andy Weir novel.
The movie also ranked among the year’s top box office performers. It initially claimed the No. 1 position before being overtaken by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael, ultimately holding the third-highest worldwide total of 2026.
Its arrival on Prime Video also comes at an ideal time. Releasing just ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend, the acclaimed sci-fi adventure is expected to attract a large streaming audience as viewers look for blockbuster entertainment during the holiday celebrations.
