“Predator: Badlands” dominates box office with $40 million debutPredator: Badlands, the newest film in the nearly 40-year-old sci-fi horror series, topped the North American box office this weekend with an estimated $40 million opening.
The 20th Century Studios movie stars Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as a lone Predator who becomes an unlikely hero, teaming up with an android played by Elle Fanning. It’s the ninth film in the franchise that began in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In second place, Paramount’s Regretting You—based on the Colleen Hoover novel—earned $7.1 million. Directed by Josh Boone, the film follows a mother (Allison Williams) and daughter (McKenna Grace) coping with loss and love.
Universal’s Black Phone 2 took third with $5.3 million, featuring Ethan Hawke returning as a chilling villain.MGM’s Sarah’s Oil, a historical faith-based drama about a young Black girl in early 1900s Oklahoma who inherits oil-rich land, opened in fourth with $4.5 million.In fifth place, Sony’s Nuremberg earned $4.1 million. The film focuses on the Nazi war trials, with Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Hermann Göring already generating Oscar buzz.
