Nearly a year after winning Best Picture at the Oscars, Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Oppenheimer is making a return to theaters. However, it will only be available in IMAX locations, with screenings starting on Friday, February 28th.
Fans can pre-order tickets on the official IMAX website, where showtimes for both digital and 70MM screenings are now listed. The website also provides a full list of participating theaters, helping viewers find the nearest location. In the U.S., only three theaters will be showing Oppenheimer in 70MM.
Released in 2023, Oppenheimer was among the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Strong word of mouth helped push its worldwide earnings to $975.5 million—an impressive feat given its lengthy runtime and historical subject matter. The film was also part of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, sharing its release date with Greta Gerwig’s widely praised Barbie, which dominated theaters in the summer of 2023.

Beyond its box office success, Oppenheimer was a major winner during awards season. It took home seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. Thanks to its overwhelming critical and commercial success, Nolan’s final earnings from the film reached nearly $100 million.
Since directing The Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan has become synonymous with the IMAX format, and Oppenheimer is no exception. While it’s not an action-packed blockbuster, the film was designed for IMAX, featuring breathtaking sequences—especially the Trinity Test—that truly shine on the biggest screens.

Although Oppenheimer has been available for home viewing for a while, cinephiles will likely seize the opportunity to experience it in IMAX again, fully immersing themselves in Nolan’s masterful storytelling. As fans anticipate his take on The Odyssey next summer, another theatrical viewing of Oppenheimer could be the perfect way to pass the time.
Those interested should secure their tickets soon, as this limited engagement is expected to wrap up in early March. With Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 set for an IMAX release on March 7th, theaters will need to clear screens for its arrival. Will you be watching Oppenheimer in IMAX this week?
