Next week, Universal Studios is releasing “Wolf Man,” the first big horror movie of the year, in partnership with Blumhouse. Last year, major studios had mixed success with their horror films, including some from Blumhouse, which didn’t do well at the box office.
Interestingly, smaller films performed much better, including ones from less-known studios. One of the biggest surprises was “Longlegs,” directed by Osgood Perkins, which became the highest-grossing movie ever for Neon. Now, a few months later, Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” another smaller, arthouse film, is about to break that record.
“Longlegs” finished its time in theaters with $74.3 million in the U.S., and “Nosferatu” is really close at $73.8 million. It has already made more money than other popular horror movies. ‘Nosferatu’ Isn’t Clowning Around As It Passes ‘Terrifier 3’ easily, and “Smile 2” ($68 million). “Nosferatu” still earns over $1 million daily, so it only needs $500,000 more to beat “Longlegs,” which will probably happen today.

When it does, it will be the third-biggest horror movie of 2024, right after “Alien: Romulus” and “A Quiet Place: Day One.” But since those two movies are a mix of different genres, “Nosferatu” will soon become the highest-earning “pure” horror movie of the year.
This movie is already the most successful one in director Robert Eggers’ career. He first became famous with “The Witch” 10 years ago, which earned $40 million worldwide. His next movie, “The Lighthouse,” made under $20 million globally, and his historical epic “The Northman” earned less than $70 million, even though it cost $90 million. “The Northman” did really well on streaming platforms, though. “Nosferatu” was made for about $50 million, and it has already earned over $100 million globally.
