Airing on BBC Three, The Kim Kardashian Diamond Heist revisits the 2016 incident where the reality star was held at gunpoint and robbed of millions in jewellery. The film features interviews with family friends, police officers, and journalists, and reveals a previously undisclosed detail.
Chief Inspector Michael Sleeckx of the Belgian police, who was involved in the robbery investigation, has revealed new details about the surveillance operation that tracked the so-called ‘grandpa robbers’ and ultimately led to their capture. This is the first time this information has been made public.
Sleeckx, who led a team in Antwerp’s diamond district for over ten years, said his team had been monitoring suspects Marceau Baum-Gertner, Aomar Aït Khedache, and Christiane ‘Cathy’ Glotin when they were spotted meeting at a McDonald’s in Antwerp.

Sleeckx remembers Baum-Gertner reaching his hand out toward Aomar as if to shake it, but when Aomar gave a slight nod in return, Baum-Gertner pulled his hand back—almost as if to say, “we know each other, but we don’t know each other. Not in public. I recall very strongly that Mr. Aomar was very, very cautious.”
The trio then entered a jewellery shop known as a hub for selling stolen goods, where they remained for four hours. Sleeckx believes a deal to sell the jewellery was negotiated there.
He also mentioned they observed “somebody who’s known as a big, big money launderer and who has a lot of cash money, going with a full backpack into a garage [near the jewellery shop], meeting the jeweller at the same moment and comes out after ten seconds without a backpack.”
Admitting it was “out of the ordinary” that it turned into “something major,” the documentary also highlights Heather McDonald, a friend of the Kardashians, who opens up about how the crime affected the family. Reflecting on Kris Jenner’s birthday celebration after the robbery, she told the BBC:
That was the first time I ever saw her come to a dinner with a private security guard, which I thought was wise.
And he just, like sat at a table, you know, just kind of staring, making sure everything’s safe, the sense I got from Kris is, just still very shaken up. Very serious.
She added:
Just last month, Kim came face to face with her robbers in court, where eight individuals were found guilty.
The Kim Kardashian Diamond Heist airs on BBC Three at 9pm tonight (Wednesday, June 25) and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am the same day.
