Filming One Hundred Years of Solitude in Colombia gave the country’s economy a big boost of 225 billion pesos ($51.8 million), according to Netflix.
Netflix shared with Deadline that this amount reflects how the production and its related activities helped Colombia’s GDP. The figure includes the money spent directly on making the show and on businesses connected to the production. However, it does not include the actual budget for the series, which hasn’t been revealed.
The adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s famous novel is the biggest TV project ever made in Colombia. When Netflix got the rights to the magical story, they agreed to recreate the mythical town of Macondo in Colombia, using local talent and workers to bring it to life.
The series has just been released and will come out in two parts, each with eight episodes. It was produced by Dynamo and filmed entirely in Colombia with a team of 900 people. The town of Macondo, shown in the series, was built on a massive 540,000 square meter area.

Netflix is celebrating its big local production of One Hundred Years of Solitude with an exhibition. The display, which runs until December 18, features some of the most memorable scenes and original costumes from the series.
Francisco ‘Paco’ Ramos, Netflix’s VP of Content for Latin America, shared that this series is one of the platform’s major projects in the region. Other exciting shows from Latin America include Senna, a drama about a racing driver, and El Eternaut, a comic book adaptation from Argentina.
