Netflix’s new miniseries American Primeval is finally out, and its Rotten Tomatoes score is here. The show has sparked mixed reactions, with critics giving it average reviews that place it somewhere in the middle.
American Primeval started with a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking it as “rotten” since the website calls anything 60% or higher “fresh.” This score might change as more critics share their thoughts in the next few days. Whether the score will go up or down is still unclear because the reviews so far are very mixed.
This doesn’t shy away from the ugliness, allowing the uncompromising savage bloodthirst of the people in their quest for land domination, If you enjoy Westerns and also love some gnarly action and violence, you are going to want to put this on your list.
Chris Joyce from Movies and Munchies shared his thoughts on the series
Maggie Lovitt from Collider praised the series for focusing on its female characters, saying,
Netflix’s American Primeval is a Western epic that stands out by putting women at the center of the story.
In a review for Forbes, Erik Kain shared mixed feelings about the show. He said,
American Primeval has its flaws, but I still recommend it. While its themes might not appeal to everyone, as a cinematic experience, it delivers exactly what I hoped for—bold, unique, and ambitious storytelling.
Martin Carr from CBR gave American Primeval an 8 out of 10. In his review, he mentioned,
Some viewers might expect the scenic beauty and raw realism of The Revenant, but Mark L. Smith has crafted something deeper and more engaging that needs time to unfold.

On the other hand, some critics weren’t as impressed. Rendy Jones from RogerEbert.com called the show “hollow and tasteless.” Elijah Gonzalez from Paste Magazine criticized it for having “shallow characters, predictable storylines, and failing to handle its violence thoughtfully.” Nick Schager from The Daily Beast added that the series felt unoriginal, saying, “This is a story you’ve seen many times before.”
American Primeval was created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg. The cast includes Sons of Anarchy actor Kim Coates, along with Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Jai Courtney, Shea Whigham, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Dane DeHaan.
According to Netflix, the series follows a mother and son escaping their past. They build a new family while facing the tough realities of freedom and cruelty in the American West.
