After the shocking cliffhanger in the Season 1 finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the hit Prime Video series is searching for new stars.
Sources say Amazon MGM Studios is looking for actors in their 20s to play John and Jane in Season 2. These leading roles will require one-year contracts. It’s not clear if formal offers have been made yet, but A-list names like Billie Eilish are being mentioned in rumors. Eilish, a two-time Oscar-winning musician, made her acting debut in an episode of Donald Glover’s previous Prime Video series, Swarm.

Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, Season 1 of Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows two strangers, Glover and Maya Erskine, who became a married couple while starting new careers as spies. They took on new identities as John and Jane Smith.
The Season 1 finale, which Sloane called a “nod to a ’70s cinema cliffhanger,” ended with John and Jane in a gunfight, leaving viewers wondering if they survived. Sloane, Glover, Erskine, and the Amazon bosses have avoided questions about whether the two stars will return.
If we tell you too much, you’ll know early if they survived.
Sloane said,
When asked if Mr. & Mrs. Smith might change each season to tell different stories with new characters, like Fargo, which Sloane worked on, she simply replied, “Maybe.”

There are rumors that Amazon’s version of the 2005 movie starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt might follow a different formula, with one-year contracts for the new leads supporting this idea. It’s believed that Glover and Erskine also had contracts for just one season.

The idea of changing characters each season is further supported by reports that the new John and Jane will be different characters, not replacements for Glover and Erskine’s roles in Season 1. This means Glover and Erskine could return in some way, whether their characters are alive or dead. The setup of Mr. & Mrs. Smith could get confusing with multiple Janes and Johns appearing in the spy-themed show.

Whether it’s Glover’s John, Erskine’s Jane, or other characters continuing the story, there will likely be some connection between seasons. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was classified as a drama, not an anthology series, at the 2024 Emmys, where it received 16 nominations. These included Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor/Actress in a Drama Series for Glover and Erskine. The show won two awards, including Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Michaela Coel.
This could be part of the creative team’s plan to keep the Season 1 cliffhanger safe. Anthology series don’t have to be submitted as such, and while it’s rare, they can compete as dramas. A good example of this is Season 1 of HBO’s True Detective.
No matter what the exact plan for Season 2 is, Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke told Deadline in July,
I think audiences will get everything they want when they come back.
