Anna Sawai, star of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, hopes for a big change in season 2 that would shift the focus from season 1. She plays Cate Randa, the granddaughter of Bill Randa and the main character in the show’s present-day storyline.
In season 1, Cate uncovers her family’s ties to Monarch and their work monitoring Titans worldwide. By the end of the season, she ends up in Hollow Earth. Season 2 will follow her and the other main characters at an Apex Cybernetics facility on Skull Island.
In an interview with TVLine, Anna Sawai shared her hopes for Cate’s role in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. She said she wants Cate to have more control over her actions and be more involved in the story.

I feel like Cate should have more agency. In Season 1, she is kind of the victim — thrown into it all and sometimes wanting to go back to her normal life. But after going down to Axis Mundi, she should come out as a different person. She’s seen stuff that she didn’t know before. They have answers and things to do now.

Monarch season 1 ended with Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) sacrificing himself so Cate, May (Kiersey Clemons), and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) could escape Hollow Earth using the Operation Hourglass vehicle. His death creates a big gap in the story, as his past was a key focus in many episodes. With Lee gone, another character will need to take the lead, and Cate seems like the best choice. Her role will likely become even more important as the story moves to Skull Island.
It’s still unclear what the story of Monarch season 2 will be about, but we know that Apex Cybernetics is at least seven years away from building Mechagodzilla, which happens in Godzilla vs. Kong. Their research on Skull Island might help with that project, and Cate could play an important role in their plans. Since there’s a big time gap between their current work and the creation of the metallic Titan, Cate’s involvement could help explain what causes this delay.
With Sawai hoping for Cate to have a bigger role, it makes sense for her to become the main focus of Monarch season 2. Season 1 did a good job introducing the large cast, but focusing on one character as the lead could make the Apex storyline clearer. While we don’t know exactly what will happen next, it would be great for Cate to take a more active role in finding out what Apex is doing on Skull Island.
