Netflix has become a favorite streaming platform for true-crime fans, offering lots of documentaries and docuseries in the genre. But the drama Mindhunter shook things up with a fresh way to tell these stories.
This two-season series, starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, was created by Joe Penhall. It was inspired by the 1995 book by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, which explained how the FBI started tracking serial killers.
In the show, viewers followed Holden Ford (played by Groff) and Bill Tench (played by McCallany) as they interviewed some of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history. David Fincher, a well-known filmmaker, played a big role in the series as a showrunner, director, and executive producer. This was one of the rare times Fincher worked on a TV series instead of a movie, making the show even more special.
David Fincher has been busy lately, working on 4K remastered versions of his popular movies like Zodiac and Fight Club, with more on the way. In a chat with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Fincher talked about the exciting chance that Mindhunter might also get special treatment.
He shared hope that both seasons could someday be part of a collection fans can enjoy at home. Fincher, who loves physical media as much as the rest of us, expressed his enthusiasm for creating something you can actually hold and keep.
He also knows that selling physical items isn’t what made Netflix as successful as it is today. He added:
From Fincher’s comments, it seems unlikely that Mindhunter will ever get a physical release. Fans of the show are sadly used to disappointment, as the series ended too soon. The second season came out back in 2019, over five years ago, yet many of us still hold onto hope for a third season to continue the story. Despite clear statements from Fincher, Netflix, and others that Mindhunter is done for good, fans can’t help but wish for more of this incredible true-crime drama.
For now, you can watch both seasons of Mindhunter on Netflix.
