Robert Pattinson is now a well-known and successful actor, but not all of his movies have done well at the box office. He first became famous through the Harry Potter and Twilight series. Lately, he’s been choosing more unusual science fiction roles, like in Claire Denis’s 2018 film High Life and Christopher Nolan’s action-packed Tenet. Most recently, Pattinson played several characters in a sci-fi movie directed by the creator of Parasite, the Oscar-winning film from 2020.
In recent years, Robert Pattinson has become a reliable box office draw. Even though Twilight was already popular as a book series, the movie franchise earned over $3.36 billion worldwide from its five films. After playing Edward Cullen, Pattinson starred in The Batman, which made more than $772 million and was the seventh biggest movie of 2022—so successful that a sequel is in the works. His latest sci-fi movie has reached some big box office goals, but it’s still expected to lose money.

Mickey 17 has reached a significant milestone worldwide, even though it’s expected to lose money at the box office. The sci-fi movie is written and directed by Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning creator of Parasite, and is based on a book by Edward Ashton.
It stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a man living in the year 2054 who joins a space colony as an “Expendable”—someone who gets cloned every time he dies so scientists can keep experimenting. The movie also features Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
After being in theaters for almost a month, Robert Pattinson’s new sci-fi movie has reached a big global milestone. According to The Numbers, Mickey 17 has made over $110 million worldwide. However, it’s still expected to lose between $75 and $80 million because it cost $118 million to make.

Even though Mickey 17 reaching over $100 million is a big deal—since only three other Hollywood movies have done that in 2025—it’s still expected to lose money. That’s because the movie had a large $118 million budget.
Usually, a film needs to earn about two and a half times its budget to make a profit. This is because theaters keep about half the ticket sales, and the budget doesn’t include marketing costs. That means Mickey 17 would need to make around $300 million just to break even, which it likely won’t reach.
