Michael Gandolfini stepped into his late father James Gandolfini’s iconic role as Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark, the 2021 prequel film exploring the early years of the legendary character from The Sopranos. With Hollywood’s ongoing trend of revivals and reboots, fans have speculated about a potential return to the Sopranos universe.
At the red carpet premiere of Daredevil: Born Again, Entertainment Tonight caught up with Gandolfini and asked whether he would reprise his role as young Tony in a rumored prequel series. The actor made it clear that, as of now, there are no plans for him to step back into the role.
Look, it’s David [Chase]’s universe. It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos-related, which would be exciting.
he said, referring to The Sopranos creator
As for the rumored prequel project, Gandolfini admitted he hasn’t heard anything about it.
I’d love to work with David again, but I think Tony’s probably set to rest now for good. But who knows, who knows — but my guess would be, that character [has] now closed the book on that.
he added, suggesting the chances of a return are slim.
What’s Next for Michael Gandolfini?
While he may not be stepping back into the world of The Sopranos, Gandolfini has plenty on his plate. He is set to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, the upcoming Disney+ reboot of Marvel’s Daredevil franchise, which picks up five years after the Netflix series. Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock, with the series premiering on March 4.
Gandolfini will also star in Warfare, a war drama directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and filmmaker Alex Garland. In the film, he plays Lieutenant McDonald of the Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company.

About Warfare
According to the film’s official synopsis, Warfare offers a visceral, real-time look at modern combat:
Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.
Although Gandolfini isn’t expecting a call about another Sopranos project, he hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility. In the meantime, fans can catch him in Daredevil: Born Again when it premieres on March 4, or in Warfare, which hits theaters nationwide on April 11.
For those looking to revisit his performance as young Tony Soprano, The Many Saints of Newark is available to stream on Max in the US.
