Matthew Lillard, one of the original stars of Scream, isn’t really worried about where the Scream movies are at right now. He’s feeling pretty confident about them and isn’t stressed about how the series is going.
I think it’s in a good place. I think that [the movie being] back in the hands of Kevin Williams is great. I love what [Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin] were doing before. nothing against them. In fact, I thought they were taking a really exciting way. I thought the movie got too violent. I think 6 was, like… I don’t think Ghostface ever needs a shotgun. I think that the movies are – everything is trying to repeat what we did in the first movie in a lot of ways. Like, a maniacal monologue at the end. It’s really hard to do. I hope that Kevin takes it in a brand new, brave, and exciting direction so that we can sort of find different colors and different joys.
Lillard tells GamesRadar+
Matthew Lillard played Stu Macher in the 1996 movie Scream, directed by Wes Craven. At the movie’s end, we find out Stu is one of the two masked killers causing chaos in Woodsboro.

The other killer is his best friend, Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich). In the original movie, Stu and Billy used knives, making the attacks feel more intense and scary. But in Scream 6, Ghostface switched things up and used a shotgun instead of a knife.

The directors, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin, did this to surprise the audience and make them think, “Whoa, that’s different!”

The writer of the original Scream movie, Kevin Williamson, will now direct the next movie, Scream 7! Recently, Matthew Lillard hinted on the Drew Barrymore Show that his character, Stu, might still be alive so he could appear in the new movie—but we’ll have to wait and see if that really happens.
Scream 7* is scheduled to be in theaters on February 6, 2026.
